Meet Denise Alphonso, Registered Nurse
With more than 30 years of nursing experience, Denise Alphonso has worked in operating theatres and procedural rooms across several countries.
A Nursing Career Across Three Continents
Born and raised in Ireland, Denise completed her Registered Nurse training there, qualifying in 1993. She then moved to London, where she spent around 10 years working in nursing.
Her career has taken her to quite a few places since then, including Melbourne, San Francisco, and Liverpool in the UK. In 2012, she settled in Brisbane with her husband and two children.
Today, Denise works as a theatre nurse for Healthcare Australia across several Brisbane hospitals. She also assists Dr Aziz at his Herston clinic as required.
Looking ahead, she’s planning to take on short-term nursing contracts in rural Queensland hospitals. Working in a rural setting has been a long-term goal of hers, and she’s looking forward to experiencing a different side of nursing.
Helping Patients Feel at Ease
Denise enjoys the particular challenge of the procedural room. Because patients are awake during their treatment, she has the opportunity to talk with them, answer questions, and help them feel more comfortable.
For her, one of the most rewarding parts of nursing is building rapport with patients. She takes the time to listen, ease any worries they may have, and offer reassurance during their procedure. She also plays a part in keeping the clinic running smoothly, helping to minimise unnecessary waiting times.
Outside the Clinic
When she’s not working, Denise enjoys practising yoga, walking in nature, and reading.
A Friendly Face During Your Visit
It’s natural to feel a little nervous before a procedure. Denise understands this and enjoys helping patients feel heard, comfortable, and cared for throughout their visit.
