Carotid Endarterectomy in Brisbane

Download Information PackThe Carotid Artery

The carotid arteries transport the major blood supply to the brain. They are located in the neck and divide into two branches. One of the branches is called the internal carotid artery (ICA), and it supplies most of the brain on the same side.

Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis is also known as hardening of the arteries. With this condition a plaque buildup is created which leads to a narrowing inside the artery itself (stenosis). As a result of the narrowing, ulcers and clots can form and be carried to the brain; this can result in a mini-stroke (TIA), a major disabling stroke, or death.

The role of carotid endarterectomy is to remove the plaque and introduce a synthetic patch to close the artery, allowing full blood flow once again.

Our Surgical Approach

Virtually all medical procedures have inherent risks and possibility of post-surgical complication. As always at Advanced Vascular, you will be advised of all pre-and-post-surgical information that will be helpful in achieving a positive outcome and ensuring your safety.

  • Hospital admission is usually on the day of the surgery or the day before.
  • The incision will be at the side of the neck. You will be asleep during the operation and will also be given antibiotics, as well as Heparin to thin the blood.
  • The artery will be opened and the plaque removed. A patch will be sewn to ensure that the vessel is kept wide open.
  • A wound drain will remain in place for 24 hours.
  • The skin will be closed with sutures under the dermal layer that do not need to be removed; wound dressing will be applied.
