Referrals & Medicare Rebates, Explained Simply
Worried you need to jump through hoops before you can see a vascular surgeon? You don’t. Booking a consultation with Advanced Vascular is far simpler than most people expect, and for many patients, especially those in regional and rural areas, it’s also the fastest way to get seen at all.
Do You Need a Referral to Book?
No. You can call our practice directly and book a consultation without seeing your GP first. A referral only becomes relevant if you’d like to claim a Medicare rebate for your consultation or treatment. If that applies to you, it’s simple to arrange: once your appointment is confirmed, you can ask your GP to provide a referral for that specific appointment and specialist.
Most GPs are able to organise this quickly, including through telehealth if that’s more convenient than an in-person visit.
Already Waiting in the Public System?
If you’ve been referred to a specialist through the public system and you’re still waiting, you don’t have to keep waiting. You can book to see Advanced Vascular privately instead, and if a new referral is needed for your Medicare rebate, it can be arranged at that point. Private health insurance is not required either. For many patients, this ends up being the more direct route to actually getting seen and treated.
Local Access, No Hospital Referral Required
For patients in regional and rural Queensland, the Northern Territory, Western Australia and beyond, this matters even more. Dr Aziz carries out scans using portable ultrasound equipment, which means he isn’t tied to a single fixed clinic. He regularly consults and treats varicose veins locally in communities that would otherwise mean a long trip to the nearest major city for this kind of specialist care.
That means if you’re in one of these areas, you don’t need a hospital referral, and you don’t need to travel. You simply call Advanced Vascular to arrange a local consultation, and if non-surgical treatment is appropriate, that can often happen locally too.
How to Book
There’s no complicated process here. Call our practice let the team know you’d like to arrange a consultation, and they’ll guide you through the rest, including whether a referral makes sense for your situation and how to sort one out quickly if it does.
