This methodology is a more traditional approach for the treatment of varicose veins. It is estimated that 10% of patients will not be suitable for this minimally invasive technique, however. Those that do qualify will be given strict instructions to follow beforehand to ensure a pleasant and positive outcome.
Possibilities During the Vein Surgery
- General or spinal anaesthesia
- Groin incision to disconnect the saphenous vein from the deep vein, with vein stripping to just below the knee
- Intravenous antibiotics
- Low dose Heparin to prevent deep vein thrombosis
- Small dressings to cover smaller incisions
- Pressure bandages to remain in place for 24 hours
- Skin closure with sutures below the dermal layer that do not need to be removed
